top five: Kevin Smith movies
Having reviewed the Kevin Smith produced film ‘Vulgar’ last week I decided to look into his back catalogue and compile a list of the top 5 of his written and directed films. His unique brand of humour and his on screen appearances as the legendary ‘Silent Bob’ as the silent half of the obnoxious duo ‘Jay and Silent Bob’ have garnered him huge cult following and seen him break into the mainstream.
5: clerks
This is the film that started it all off for Kevin Smith. It was his first ever a feature film and made on the tiny budget of $27,000 but has gone on to gross millions. A true indie success story and a fan favourite: This is the film that introduced the world to shop clerks Randal and Dante as well as the weed smoking duo Jay and Silent bob, characters that have gone onto to feature in a number of subsequent Smith films. The plot is basic and invites us take a look into the everyday lives of two shop workers. It’s the hilarious quotable dialogue and surreal stations that arise, that have become a staple of Smith’s films, that make it so damn enjoyable.
4: Red state
An interesting movie for Kevin Smith as it was the first and only time he wrote and directed a pure horror film. The first half of the film focuses on an extreme religious cult who lure in 'sinners' and torture and murder them to make examples of them. The 2nd half of the film focuses or an armed response unit trying to take downt he cult who arent going out without a fight. the results are nothing short of electrifying. The first half is genuinely scary and raises a lot of questions about organised religion and the 2nd half is a gun blazing action packed shootout that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
3: zack and miri make a porno
An X rated comedy which see long term friends Zack and Miri (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth banks) coming up with the idea to shoot and star in a porno movie in order to make money to pay off their mounting bills. With the help of some unlikely characters ( Jason Mewes as Lester 'The molester' and Craig Robinson as the main finaciancial backer) the plan is put into effect but is not without plenty of hillrious set backs and a complicated and budding romance between Zack and Miri. Overall the film is one of the best laugh out loud gross out comedies ever made. it definiately pushed the limits of good taste but the comedy is top notch throughout.
2: Dogma
A controversial, intelligent and hillarious comedy film which revolves around two fallen angels persuing a loophole to help them get back into heaven. The film ,not so subtedly, pokes fun at the catholic religion which resulted in mass protests over the film's release. Despite the controversy, it is actually a very thought provoking and funny film with an absolutely amazing star studded cast including Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, Alanis Morisette (as God) and Jason mewes and Kevin smith reprising their roles as Jay and Silent Bob.
1: Jay and silent bob strike back
In my opinion this is the greatest comedy ever written. More ambitious than Mallrats and Clerks, it follows Jay and Silent Bob on their wild and chaotic quest to hollywood to try and put a stop to a feature film being made about them. The profanity laced rants from Jay never fail to amuse and Will Ferrel does a brilliantly hillaruos job as an extra vigilante bumbling Wildlife Marshall in hot persuit of Jay and Silent Bob after they steal a monkey. The film may be Over the top, it maybe immature and even puerile, the plot is utterly ridiculous but its wirrten so well it works. It also feature a slew of hilarious cameos from the likes of Sean William Scott, Chris Rock, Ben Affleck, Mat Damon, jason Biggs and many many more. Top class entertainment.
